【Croatia】Split – Big city with plenty of Game of Thrones Filming Locations

Split is the second largest city in Croatia with a history of 1700 years. Many scenes in Game of Thrones were filmed in Split, such as Meereen and a small part of Braavos. It is also a big port for ferries, people take ferry from here to Adriatic islands.

Ferries in Split

Dioklecijanova palača(Game of Thrones scene)

It is the entire old town area, a grandiose seaside fortress and luxurious giant rural villa built around AD 295-305 as the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, where he retired after abdicating. Due to historical factors, the palace has been severely damaged. It was listed as a cultural heritage site in 1979. It is also a part of the Meereen dungeon in the Game of Thrones TV series.

The original filming location of the show has been closed off and turned into an paid exhibition area, so visitors can only take pictures of the other underground areas. However, you can still get an idea of what the place looks like by looking at the stone pillars and walls.

Vrh Telegrin

The highest point in the city center, specifically designed for sightseeing, offers a view of the ships coming in and out of the port, as well as the stunning Split city at night. At the top of the hill, you can find an ancient watchtower which is believed to have been used for communication during the Ottoman Empire period.
